During this presentation standardization is discussed from a business economics viewpoint and the premise that, today, every company is embedded in the "networked economy". A number of aspects and consequences of globalization, outsourcing and standardization will be addressed. The speaker will also highlight the backgrounds of the trend to globalization, changes in outsourcing relations and the impact on a company's standardization department. Company knowledge and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) play an important role here.

10h35   International supply and standardization

Outsourcing strategies are changing in that, besides production, also engineering is increasingly outsourced. Large suppliers are taking care of development and production of complete systems. As a result, they are forming a link in chain between outsourcers and the small and mid-sized (sub)suppliers. Therefore the importance of standardization is constantly increasing. The way how normative information is created and managed must meet these requirements adhered to this importance.

11h10   Break and visit to the information market

11h50   "A look over the fence": standardization in a hospital

ball.gif (1653 bytes) Mr. J.M.R. Debey, director Pro-GRAM

In the medical world standardization plays a crucial, if not life saving, role. The new Electronic Patient Dossier increases the demands to modern standardization. How can this be managed in a hospital? As in the industry, practice is governed by procedures, certificates and (international) suppliers. Procedures are established for each customer. or patient. Management, currency and availability of information are essential.

12h40   Lunch and visit to the information market

13h45   Start of parallel sessions A + B

Parallel session A:

Parallel session B:

DSM Standardization and PolyDoc, in tight co-operation, have developed the software program "NormFlow". This program supports the creation, maintenance and publication of company standards.
The program is build upon a structured method to create standards, to integrate additional information and a variety of publication methods using one source. Special is the attention given to the linguistic aspects of standards.
DSM will enlighten the reasons to develop "NormFlow" and PolyDoc will show the working program.
Normative information (e.g. specifications and standards) is more and more made digital available to suppliers.
Questions such as: what procedures should be followed and how can the usage of the information be secured should be answered. Based upon a pre-study by KPN NAM will shown how these matters should be handled.

The importance of normative information, such as procedures, working methods and knowledge about company processes (best practices) is increasing.
Kema has developed a method to specify these best practices. Océ has made these best practices interactive and dynamic available to the users by using Intranet techniques. Examples of a product safety system and a environmental care system will show how the system is made and how it is used.
Knowledge is capital. How can you maintain, enlarge and communicate the knowledge within your company? Knowledge, often for a large part present as undocumented experiences in the heads of employees. How can you prevent losses in continuity of company processes, caused by failure or by leaving of employees? Knowledge management will show one direction. Besides new insights also technologies are developed which are meaningful for knowledge management as a form a capital management.
15h20     Break and  visit to the information market

15h50     Digital Standardization Products
In this presentation two aspects are discussed:
producing and obtaining of digital information.

ball.gif (1653 bytes) Ir. P.J.J. Maas, member of the management team,
    Dutch standardization institute NEN

Standards are produced and distributed in a digital form. Thus, users must be able to input NEN, DIN, EN and ISO-standards, to name a few. Standards institutions have invested considerable effort in issuing standards in digital format. We now have more clarity on the technical and commercial approaches of the institutions as regards production, management, distribution and sales. Examples will be discussed of the possibilities and the added value for the user.

16h40     Round-up with the   "scale of Modernization"

ball.gif (1653 bytes) Drs. H.J.M. Rutten, director PolyDoc

The scale of modernization has become a fixed item at our annual conference. Basically, it is a test in which scores are assigned enabling companies to determine in how far their standards department is geared to meet today’s challenges. The scores may also serve as a basis for improvement programmes. And, as always, the winner receives an original prize.

17h20    Closing address, visit to the information market and a drink
